Second Overtime: 4:50 Left

5:45 Fairfield's Matthew Uy picks up a yellow card for a hard tackle.

The Stags have not had the ball on their half of the field for more than a few seconds this overtime in a complete reversal. They will need to turn up the pressure to earn more than a tie.

Second Overtime: 7:00

8:43 A nice steal by Jean Fauchet almost set up Fairfield with a clear path to the net, but a Hartwick defender cleared the ball out of danger at the last second.

6:46 The ball crossed the box and could have set up Boyle for a goal, but it was just past him.

End of First Overtime

The first overtime comes to a close with still no score. Fairfield had the two best chances of the half, with Hartwick only really getting close to the goal once. This seems to be headed towards a tie game, but there have been a few chances. Both teams appear a little tired, but Fairfield has shown they can strike out of nowhere.

First Overtime: 5:00

9:04 Rutledge gets free down the sideline and bounces the ball off his head twice before it is played out of bounds by Hartwick, leading to a corner kick by Fairfield, taken by Lentine, but a foul is called while the ball is in the air, ending the threat immediatly.

5:16 Rutledge takes a long pass and controls it for a second before it is knocked out of bounds for another Fairfield corner. It is played out by Hartwick, for another corner, which is again cleared.

The Stags have been on the offensive most of the overtime, but have not been able to connect on any opportunities.

Headed to OT

3 Minutes before the overtime starts, two 10 minute overtime periods, with the first goal ending the game.

Fairfield has not played in an overtime game yet this season, while Hartwick played one on September 16 against Lafayette at the Penn Soccer Classic, which ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Stags have played four one goal games this season and are 4-0 in those contests. Hartwick is 0-2 in two one goals games so far this season.

End of Second Half

2:49 Handball called on Fairfield after the ball deflects off of a Stags player's arm, leading to a free kick outside the box for Hartwick. Jonathan-Garcia Torres takes the kick for Hartwick, but the shot is cleared out. Mike Lentine chases a long ball down the sideline, but the goalkeeper Vuolo charges out and clears it before Lentine can reach the ball.

Neither side could keep the pressure on in the final minutes of the game to convert on a goal and we are going to overtime.

Second Half: 5:00

7:38 Francini chases a ball outside the box and falls on it, leading to a hand ball. The free kick is taken by Hartwick right outside the box and headed out by Jack Cleverly.

5:10 A mistake by Francini nearly costs Fairfield as he cannot get a pass out to Clements, bouncing it short. Luckily Fairfield's Cleverly played it out of bounds.

Second Half: 10:00

13:00 Hartwick with another scoring chance, could not see who took the shot, but it was just deflected out by Francini for a corner kick.

12:38 The corner kick resulted in a foul on Hartwick, ending the danger and leading to a yellow card being issued to Liam Parrington as he argued the foul should have been called for his team instead of against.

12:02 Bailey sprays the ball towards the net, but it goes clear of everyone and out of bounds. Steve Desmond checks back in for Fairfield replacing Matthew Uy who has played a hard game, with a lot of good passes, setting up a few scoring chances, he has looked very impressive once again.

11:05 Hope beats his man down the left side but cannot corral the ball and kicks it out of bounds for a free kick, instead of turning at goal for a one on one opportunity.

10:00 Corner kick by Hartwick is booted right off of a Fairfield player by a Hartwick player, whose number I was unable to see, leading to a second corner kick. This time Pat Kelly sent the ball clear.

Only ten minutes left in this game and neither side has been able to convert on their chances, it's been a tightly played game, with a lot of chances, but both sides locking down when they need to. Hartwick has really picked up the pressure the past minute or so.

Second Half: 15:00

19:07 Tucker Nathans enters the game replacing David Piedrahita and giving Fairfield fresh legs.

17:10 The Stags pick up a free kick after Kerr McLeod is fouled, with Clements again taking the kick, just in front of midfield. Clements pounds the ball at the net, but it is cleared away easily by Hartwick.

Second Half: 20:00

23:23 A sliding stop by Pat Kelly blocked a shot from Steven Amaya of Hartwick, but the ball came free to McCann, who attacked the net, but could not get a good shot off and the ball was cleared away.

22:31 Boyle nearly connected with a header, but Francini leaped to make the save.

20:50 Hartwick had another great chance as Boyle again found himself open in front of the goal, but his shot was not great and it found the arms of Francini for another save.

Second Half: 25:00

14 to 23 saved by Francini.

29:45 Hartwick makes a run down the side with Boyle driving down the right side and swinging a pass over to forward Austin McCann, who shot at Francini, who dropped to his knees to make the save.

28:54 Boyle again found himself near the net, but Francini charged out and booted the ball away at the last minute.

27:40 Christian Uy raced down the far sideline and made a great move to get past the Hartwick defense but his cross went out of bounds, ending the threat.

26:44 Bailey was taken down in the corner after a nice pass by Pat Kelly found him free down the sideline. Free kick taken by Clements is headed out of bounds for a Fairfield corner kick.

25:49 Stags corner kick is taken by Clements and bounces out to Matthew Uy who rips a shot that goes out of bounds.

Still no score and both defensive sides are playing very strong, but Fairfield has had many more opportunities this half, but has not been able to convert. Francini has stepped up twice with nice saves on Boyle and McCann, stopping two near goals.

Second Half: 30:00

36:24 Bailey sends a cross into the box, but it cannot find the foot of Christian Uy and bounces harmlessley into the hands of goalkeeper Vuolo.

35:44 Clements takes a free kick which finds its way into the box, but is headed clear by Hartwick.

34:40 Hartwick gets its first chance of the half, but Boyle's shot is saved by Francini.

32:30 Piedrahita is taken down hard at midfield by Sean Buruschkin and a yellow card is awarded to him for the foul. Kelly takes the free kick, but the ball is headed out of danger by Hartwick.

31:15 Aldo Hope enters the game for the Stags as the first sub of the half, replacing Todd Rutledge. Hope provided a spark off the bench against Adelphi and assisted on the lone Fairfield goal, with his speed he can be a game changer off the bench.

Start of Second Half: 40:00

42:44 Clements takes a free kick from outside the box, but the ball is knocked out of bounds to Fairfield.

41:04 Rutledge gets free on the net, but Vuolo pounces out and stops the ball before it could get close to the net.

38:54 Matthew Uy rips a shot from just outside the box, but it clears the crossbar and goes out of bounds.

End of First Half

8:30 Very physical play by Cleverly as he shoves down John Paul Boyle as he attacks the net along with Chris Jackson, earning Hartwick a free kick right outside the box, taken by Boyle, but blocked away by the defense.

5:53 Boyle broke through the Stags defense but could not get a good foot on the ball and sent the shot into the hands of Francini slowly.

5:25 The Stags come right back with Christian Uy and Sam Bailey attacking the net. Uy pulled back and took a shot which curved just over the rightside of the net and out of bounds.

4:25 David Piedrahita is taken down hard on a sliding tackle by Liam Parrington, earning a free kick. Nice sportsmanship by Parrington as he helps Piedrahita up. Kelly takes the kick and after bouncing off of McLeod's head it found Skara's foot, who missed the net and eventually a foul was called on Steve Desmond as he battled for the ball.

1:59 Another free kick for the Stags after Skara was fouled just in front of midfield, again taken by Kelly, but he drops it to McLeod who attacks and drops the ball to Matthew Uy, but the ball is put out by Hartwick and eventually a foul is called on Fairfield ending the threat.

The half ends with the score tied at 0. A much similar game to the last one against Adelphi, with Fairfield playing their normal tight defense and gaining a few shots on net, but not converting. Hartwick looks solid with a lot of chances of their own, but all have been turned aside by Fairfield.

Should be an exciting second half.

First Half: 10:00

Long delay for the injury, but after awhile he is up and walks off the field by his own power, which is good to see.

13:20 Stags Todd Rutledge restarts the game quickly and races down towards the goal and gets a one on one opportunity with Vuolo, but he blocks it away, where Christian Uy tries to control the ball for Fairfield, but he also cannot get a shot on the empty net.

12:35 Hartwick comes right back with an attack on Fairfield and Jackson attempts a shot but it is blocked out of bounds by Kelly.

Fairfield is playing way up on defense, attacking Hartwick right as they cross the midfield line and using their speed to their advantage.
18:20 Kelly makes a great defensive play and fins Kerr McLeod with a pass down the right side of the field, who passes on to Todd Rutledge, who gets free all the way down the side and cuts into the box and takes a shot on the net, which is deflected out of bounds for a corner. Matthew "Little" Uy takes the corner, but nothing comes of it.

14:33 Sam Bailey makes a run down the left side of the field and is taken down hard on a sliding tackle by a Hartwick defener, earning the Stags a free kick. Clements takes the kick and pounds the ball into the box, where Jack Cleverly puts his head on the ball, but into the hands of Hartwicks goal keeper Jeremy Vuolo, who had to make one or two steps to his right to make the save.

13:49 An injury to Hartwick's Ashton Henry on the free kick has stopped the game for a few minutes. Both sides are passing around the ball while Henry is being treated just inside the box.

First Half: 20:00

Really nice night here in Fairfield, it's still warm but with the sun gone it's a lot more comfortable. A orangeish, full moon hangs over the trees in the background, creating a cool atmosphere for the game. The student section has filled a bit more as well.

25:22 Hartwick's Chris Jackson had another attmept a the net, ripping a long shot which rolled just wide of the left corner of the net and out of bounds. Hartwick has taken over control of the game in a lot of ways, keeping the ball out of their half of the field for most of the last ten or so minutes, but the Stags defense has remained tough and not allowed them to deep in their zone either.

24:17 Free Kick for the Stags taken by Kelly, curves towards the net where he finds the head of a leaping Tom Clements, but the ball deflects wide and out of bounds, keeping the score tied at 0.

23:14 A nice pass finds Hartwick with an open pass into the box, but John Paul Boyle cannot get a good foot on it and the ball rolls to Fairfield's Jon Paul, Francini, who grabs it for the save.

21:48 The Stags found themselves in danger as Jackson was free down the left side and made a pass into the box which was just barely cleared away by the Stags Tom Skara before Boyle could get a shot on goal.

First Half: 30:00

The action has picked up a bit over the past five minutes with both sides taking shots at the goal, but neither side has been able to get pass the opposite's defense. It seems like its going to be a tight game, but both sides do show some signs of opening up.

35:00 - Midfielder Steven Amaya made a pass to teammate John Paul Boyle for Hartwick, who dribbled around the box, trying to allude Kerr McLeod, but was eventually forced to take a shot at the net as David Piedrhaita joined McLeod on defense, but the shot curved in easily to Stags goalkeeper J.P. Francini.

34:23 - Senior Pat Kelly found himself with the ball at midfield, wide open and dribbled towards the net, where he had an open look at the net, and ripped a shot, which moved right up over the top crossbar and out. Kelly has not played much in his Fairfield career until now and has never scored a goal. He earned the starting chance a few weeks ago and seems to be making the most of it.

32:12 - Amaya again found himself in on the action, sending a pass to forward Chris Jackson who took a shot for Hartwick which went over the crossbar and out of bounds to end the threat.

Start of First Half: 38:42

The Stags have the same starting lineup as normal, with senior Pat Kelly making his second straight start at back.

Not much happening for the first five minutes of the game, both teams are keeping the ball around midfield, with neither side having a scoring threat yet. The student section has the normal group of red-wearing, screaming fans led by Hutch, but the group is much smaller, probably around 12 with a scattering of maybe 20 more students, not nearly as much of a turnout.

The field is very slick as well, with a lot of moisture in the air and on the field, Todd Rutledge just went after a ball and slide across the field.

Men's Soccer Preview

Tonight's men's soccer game should be an exciting one. The Stags will be looking to avenge last season's disappointing 2-0 loss to Hartwick at Hartwick. The rivalry between these two schools has been growing, as Head Coach Carl Rees attended and coached at Hartwick.

The Stags will look to continue their dominance at home, where they have not lost this season and will also look to extend their shutout streak to four games. They have not allowed a goal since the 18 minute mark of the first half against Boston College in their only loss of the year.

Fairfield is continuing to try and climb back into the NSCAA Top 25, after dropping out two weeks ago following the BC loss. The Stags did reclaim the top spot in the North Atlantic poll, taking back the spot from Loyola College, who lost two games this past week.

The Stags will need strong defense from the three key backs, Tom Skara '08, Tom Clements '09 and Jack Cleverly '11 in front of goalkeeper Jon Paul Francini '08 who ranks in the top 20 in goals against in the country.

Check the Mirror Sports Blog for live game coverage, as long as the wireless at Lessing Field allows.

End of First Half

Stags hold 1-0 lead as the half comes to a close. Fairfield tried to pull ahead by two goals as the clock wound down, with under one minute left in the half, as Sam Bailey raced down the field and pulled the goalie out, dropped the ball off to Matthew Uy, who took a shot that was deflected wide of the empty net. Uy quickly set up for a Stags corner kick, and it was deflected in the box, but saved by Yale's goalkeeper.

Almost 1,000 students in attendance tonight.

Stags Strike First

Despite few scoring opportunities for the beginning portion of the game, the Stags are the first on the scoreboard, off the foot of Sam Bailey with 12:28 left in the half. Strong midfield play by the Uy brothers, Christian and Matt, and David Piedrahita led to a beautiful cross from Matt to Sam Bailey who connected on his third goal of the year.

Yale Scores...Almost

At 16:20 Yale's Brad Rose broke down the sideline on a long pass, stopped and then put the ball into the net, but the goal was waved off by off-sides, causing the at first depressed Stags fans to cheer loudly.

The entire sideline opposite me is filled with students, great turnout, one of the best I've seen. Great to see fans supporting the Stags.

19:10 Stags Still Few Chances

Yale has been in control of the ball most of the game and had two scoring chances already.

At 21:21 Yale had a free kick from just outside the box saved by JP and then a header by Yale's Jordan Raybould which went just wide of the net a few seconds ago.

Stags Have First Chance

Fairfield had its first shot at the goal at 30:57, when Tom Clements swung a nice pass to Christian Uy, who collided with the goalkeeper, but could not get the ball into the net. Coach Rees yelled for a foul, telling the ref to watch the goalie.

Yale Quick Start

Yale off to a fast start with a shot on Francini in goal and a lot of pressure, but the Stags defense turned them away, including a nice diving save by J.P. Tom Clements yells out "Wake Up" to his fellow defensemen.

Nice crowd on hand tonight, with the student section filled, loud and led as always by Hutch.

My First

Hello, my name is Alex Doten and I will be your Fairfield sports blogger this year. I'm a junior from Boston (yes I'm a sox fan) and I live off campus. My first order of business is to discuss the fall sports teams. Both men's and women's soccer are off to good starts. The men have seemingly continued their momentum from last year into this one, after winning their first NCAA tournament game over Uconn a year ago. They are nationally ranked, but will not let their pre season hype be an excuse to get a lazy, but only give them further motivation to succeed this year and win their second conference title in a row. Now that the upper classmen have had their taste of victory from a season ago, they only want to succeed further in the big dance this season. The women are led by an extremely talented group of upper classmen and a stellar incoming freshman class. The field hockey team also has high hopes, although the beginning of their season has been marred by controversy with the dismissal of senior captain and emotional leader Lauren Callahan being unfairly singled out and robbed of her senior season by a questionable move by the coach. Don't get me wrong, the team is still extremely talented and their starting goalie is back, but any sort of injury could be catastrophic for the hopes for an otherwise deep and talented crop of players.

Stags Off to Fast Start

The Stags may have lost two of its top players, Alex Cunliffe and Mike Troy, from last season's MAAC Championship team, but they have reloaded and are again showing why they are one of the top soccer programs in the country.

Fairfield, picked to win the MAAC conference again this season, has started 2-0 with wins over St. John's and Buffalo.

Head Coach Carl Rees brought in another strong recruiting class, including Canadian Todd Rutledge, who scored his first goal in a 2-1 victory over formerly No. 17 St. John's this past weekend. Joining Rutledge in the freshmen class at Matthew Uy, the brother of sophomore Christian Uy, who has played for the US U-17 National team. Uy picked up his first point as a member of the Stags, assisting on Rutledge's goal.

Back Jack Cleverly, Rees' latest import from England, has also played a significant role in the first two games.

The Stags have received strong play from senior Sam Bailey, who has scored game-winning goals in both games played. Fellow senior J.P. Francini has also had a solid start, allowing just one goal to St. John's and picking up a shutout against Buffalo.

Fairfield will travel to Boston College on September 7 for a tough matchup, before returning home for its home opener against Yale on September 15 at Lessing Field.
